Cafés & Delis

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

In 1973 we opened a sandwich shop called the Yellow Deli, so that we could all work together and have a way to support ourselves. We didn’t have any money to fix the place up, so we tore down an old barn, saved the shingles and the wood, and even straightened out the bent nails to use again. The place turned out cozy and comfortable and down-to-earth, sort of like we’re turning out since our Master salvaged us and has started to straighten us out. We’ve opened many cafés and delis since that time, always using reclaimed materials, and when people come in for the first time they often say the same thing: “I feel like I’ve stepped into another world.” Maybe it’s because they’re not used to barn wood. But then again, maybe it’s because we serve the fruit of the Spirit. Why not ask?
